What Are Herbal Bitters, and Why Do People Love Them?

Bitters have been part of traditional wellness for generations. Here is what they are and how folks fold them into daily life.

When people walk into the shop and see the shelf of bitters, the first question is almost always the same: "What do you actually do with these?" It is a great question, because bitters can seem a little mysterious if you did not grow up with them.

Bitters are herbal preparations made from plants with — you guessed it — a bitter taste. Roots, barks, and leaves like bitter melon, gentian, and many others have been used across African, Caribbean, and European traditions for generations, often taken before or after meals.

Why bitter?

Modern diets lean heavily on sweet and salty flavors, and bitter has mostly disappeared from our plates. Traditional herbalists have long believed that bitter tastes help wake up the body and support digestion. Many of my customers describe a small daily dose as a reset — a moment to check in with their body.

Finding the right one for you

Our African Wellness Bitters is a 22-herb formula and a favorite for folks who want a strong, traditional blend. The Women Wellness Living Bitters was created with women in mind, and the Soursop Bitters has a slightly gentler profile that many first-timers appreciate.

Start small, follow the directions on the label, and talk with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication. Bitters are a tradition to be respected, not rushed.
